Conventional approach

Conventional piano sight reading approach suggests us to count as follow:

What note is this?
hm... let's start with the Middle-C
... the one below is a B
... then an A
... and G
... and F
... and E
... finally the D

In paino playback we are dealing with a stream of notes, we don't have the leisure of seconds to count. But how some of the pianist can sight read a new piece in real time?

Recommended approach

1. Stop counting the lines and spaces.
2. Visualizing the piano.
3. Train your instincts.

G-B-D-F-A, therefore a D.

can we do better?

TIP#1: You do not need to count to know which line (or space) a note is on (e.g. this one is in the middle). TIP#2: Open and close the card until you see the key even when the card is close. TIP#3: Do you know that both the lines and spaces are repersenting white keys? Each white keys can line up nicely with all the line and space. It's like turning a full piano keyboard 90 degrees counter clockwise.
